Empower Your Team!

Sep 16, 2013

I am amazed at the number of business leaders I talk with everyday who make comments similar to, “If you want something done right, do it yourself”.  To me, what they are saying is “I don’t trust the people on my team. It's not easy for a leader to rise above "I'll do it myself". Doing so, will provide amazing benefits!

People (your human resources) will act as they are treated.  If they are not trusted by their leader, they won’t be trustworthy.  If they are micromanaged on every single task they are given, they will require supervision to see their task through to completion.  Instead, if people are empowered to complete their responsibilities and trusted to get the job done, more times than not, they will excel in their roles.

Be careful though, neglect can be just as harmful as micromanaging.  Neglect can damage trust and empowerment just as much as micromanaging.

Here a few tips to walking that fine line:

  1. When assigning responsibilities to team members, let them participate in defining the acceptable outcome.

  2. Let the employee handle the details of getting the job done.

  3. Pre-schedule appointments for status updates on projects and stay out of the way between appointments.

  4. Spend time simply walking around talking to your teamand getting to know them at a personal level.

  5. Change your mindset - Assume your team will get the job done as opposed to assuming you need to do the job yourself!
